Pere Lachaise Cemetery
The most visited cemetery in the world — Paris's lush hillside necropolis of the famous.
Overview
Père Lachaise is the largest and most famous cemetery in Paris and the most visited cemetery in the world, a sprawling, leafy necropolis on a hillside in the east of the city. Opened in 1804, it was designed as a garden cemetery, with winding cobbled lanes shaded by old trees winding past tens of thousands of elaborate tombs, chapels, and monuments.
Père Lachaise is famous as the resting place of an extraordinary roll-call of the celebrated: the composer Chopin, the writers Molière, Balzac, Proust, and Oscar Wilde, the singer Édith Piaf, and the rock star Jim Morrison, whose grave draws crowds of fans. As much an open-air sculpture museum and tranquil park as a burial ground, it is one of the most atmospheric and beloved places in Paris.
