Eiffel Tower
The wrought-iron icon of Paris, the most-visited paid monument in the world.
Overview
The Eiffel Tower is the most famous landmark in Paris and one of the most recognizable structures on Earth, a 330-meter wrought-iron lattice tower rising from the Champ de Mars beside the Seine. Designed by Gustave Eiffel's company and completed in 1889 as the entrance arch for the World's Fair marking the centenary of the French Revolution, it was the tallest human-made structure in the world for 41 years.
Initially derided by some Parisians as an eyesore, the tower quickly became the beloved symbol of Paris and of France. Its three visitor levels — reached by elevators and stairs — offer breathtaking panoramas over the city, and each evening the tower sparkles with thousands of lights on the hour, a dazzling spectacle witnessed by millions. It remains the most-visited paid monument in the world.
