Luxor Obelisk
An ancient Egyptian obelisk over 3,000 years old, now the centerpiece of Paris's Place de la Concorde.
Overview
The Luxor Obelisk is a 23-meter, 3,000-year-old ancient Egyptian obelisk of red granite standing at the center of the Place de la Concorde in Paris, one of the city's most famous landmarks. Carved during the reign of the pharaoh Ramesses II around 1250 BC, it originally stood with a twin at the entrance to the Luxor Temple in Egypt, its faces covered in hieroglyphs praising the pharaoh.
It was given to France by Egypt in the 19th century and, in a remarkable feat of engineering, transported by ship and erected in the Place de la Concorde in 1836 — on the very spot where the guillotine once stood during the French Revolution. Topped with a gold-leafed pyramidion added later, it links the grandeur of ancient Egypt with the heart of modern Paris.
