Notre-Dame de Paris
The great Gothic cathedral of Paris, a medieval masterpiece reborn after the 2019 fire.
Overview
Notre-Dame de Paris is one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture and one of the most beloved monuments in the world, standing on the Île de la Cité in the heart of Paris. Begun in 1163 and largely completed by the mid-14th century, the cathedral pioneered architectural innovations like the flying buttress, which allowed its soaring stone vaults, vast rose windows, and slender walls of stained glass.
For over 850 years Notre-Dame has been at the center of French history — the coronation of Napoleon, countless national events, and the inspiration for Victor Hugo's novel that helped save it from neglect. A devastating fire in April 2019 destroyed its roof and spire and shocked the world, but a remarkable restoration returned the cathedral to its glory, and it reopened in December 2024. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it remains a masterpiece of medieval faith and craft.
