Arc de Triomphe
Napoleon's colossal triumphal arch crowning the Champs-Élysées and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Overview
The Arc de Triomphe is one of the most famous monuments in Paris, a colossal triumphal arch standing 50 meters tall at the center of the Place Charles de Gaulle, where twelve grand avenues — including the Champs-Élysées — radiate outward like a star. Commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 to honor the armies of France and modeled on the triumphal arches of ancient Rome, it was completed in 1836.
Its massive piers are carved with monumental reliefs, most famously 'La Marseillaise' (The Departure of the Volunteers), and inscribed with the names of battles and generals. Beneath the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from the First World War, its eternal flame rekindled every evening since 1923. A climb of 284 steps reaches a rooftop terrace with one of the finest views in Paris.
