Newgrange
A 5,200-year-old Irish passage tomb, older than Stonehenge, aligned to the winter-solstice sunrise.
Overview
Newgrange in Ireland's Boyne Valley is one of the most famous and important prehistoric monuments in the world, a vast Neolithic passage tomb built around 3200 BC — older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. This great circular mound, about 85 meters across and 13 meters high, covers a long stone passage leading to a central burial chamber, the whole encircled by massive kerbstones carved with mysterious spiral and geometric art.
Newgrange is celebrated above all for its astronomical alignment: for a few mornings around the winter solstice, the rising sun shines through a precisely placed 'roof-box' above the entrance and creeps down the passage to illuminate the inner chamber — a breathtaking feat of engineering and astronomy by its Stone Age builders. Part of the Brú na Bóinne UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a profound monument to Neolithic Ireland.
