Overview

Worlds End State Park, tucked in a dramatic gorge of north-central Pennsylvania’s Sullivan County, is one of the most scenically striking parks in the state — a place where Loyalsock Creek has carved a deep, boulder-strewn canyon through the Allegheny Plateau, its banks lined with towering hemlocks and hardwoods. The park’s name captures its character: here, the outside world falls away into a wild, intimate canyon.

More than 780 acres of park land wrap the gorge, with the creek offering swimming holes and gentle wading, miles of hiking trails climbing to dramatic overlooks, and roads winding through the canyon beneath the canopy. The renowned Loyalsock Trail — a long-distance trail celebrated for its scenery — passes through. In fall, the gorge blazes with color; in spring, the creek rushes full. A wild and intimate canyon, Worlds End State Park is a treasured natural gem of Pennsylvania’s Endless Mountains.

Recreation

Worlds End State Park offers swimming and wading in Loyalsock Creek’s natural swimming holes (the park is famous for its creek swimming, especially on hot summer days), hiking the canyon trails and the Loyalsock Trail (with its dramatic overlooks), fishing the creek for trout, camping, picnicking, and exploring the gorge. The High Rock Overlook and other vantage points offer sweeping views of the canyon and forested ridges. Swimming in the creek and hiking the gorge trails to the overlooks are the signature draws. The combination of a wild forested canyon, natural swimming holes and dramatic ridge views makes Worlds End a hidden classic of Pennsylvania.

Best Time to Visit

Summer brings the warmest water for swimming in Loyalsock Creek and the lush, shaded cool of the canyon, while fall transforms the gorge into an explosion of color — one of the finest foliage drives and hikes in the Endless Mountains — and spring brings the creek at its fullest and most dramatic rush. Winter quiets the canyon. The creek swimming peaks in July and August; the foliage peaks in October. Come in summer for creek swimming and cool canyon shade, or fall for spectacular color in the gorge — both are exceptional.

History

The gorge and surrounding forests were the traditional homeland of regional Native peoples and later the domain of the lumber era, when Loyalsock Creek carried log drives through the canyon. The surrounding forests were heavily cut in the 19th century before the land was acquired for the state park system. The park’s evocative name — Worlds End — reflects both the remoteness of the canyon and the dramatic end-of-the-world feeling of the gorge. The Loyalsock Trail, one of Pennsylvania’s beloved long-distance trails, was blazed through and has brought generations of hikers to the park’s scenery since its development in the mid-20th century.

Geology

Worlds End’s gorge was carved by Loyalsock Creek cutting down through the layered sedimentary rock of the Allegheny Plateau — sandstone, shale and conglomerate deposited in ancient seas and uplifted during Appalachian mountain-building, then dissected by rivers. The steep, boulder-strewn canyon reflects the creek’s energetic down-cutting through layers of rock that erode at different rates, leaving ledges, rapids and the dramatic walls of the gorge. The glaciers of the last Ice Age shaped the upland topography above the gorge. The layered plateau rock, the persistent down-cutting creek and the glacially shaped highlands created this wild canyon in the Endless Mountains.

Wildlife

Worlds End’s forested canyon hosts white-tailed deer, black bears, wild turkeys, porcupines, and a rich birdlife including the warblers, thrushes and woodpeckers of the deep hemlock-hardwood forest, with the creek holding wild trout and the canyon sheltering salamanders and other forest-floor species. The park lies within the broader Loyalsock State Forest, expanding the wild habitat. While the park is visited mainly for its creek swimming and canyon scenery, the hemlock-lined gorge and surrounding forest offer good wildlife watching and birding, with the spring warbler migration through the canyon a notable draw.

Ecology

Worlds End State Park protects a forested gorge ecosystem within the Loyalsock State Forest — a deep canyon of hemlocks, white pines and hardwoods lining the creek, cool microclimate gorge habitat, nesting warblers and thrushes, wild trout, and diverse woodland wildflowers in spring. The hemlocks, which define the canyon’s character, are threatened by the hemlock woolly adelgid, an invasive insect creeping northward. The cool gorge and the wild creek are ecologically sensitive. Protecting the creek’s water quality, the hemlock forest and the gorge habitats sustains both the ecology and the wild beauty of Worlds End.

Cultural Significance

Worlds End State Park holds a beloved place among Pennsylvania’s hidden gems — a dramatic forested gorge with natural swimming holes and sweeping overlooks, celebrated for its intimate wildness in the heart of the Endless Mountains. Its name alone — Worlds End — has made it a destination for those seeking something beyond the ordinary state park. The Loyalsock Trail, one of Pennsylvania’s finest long-distance trails, passes through and has connected hikers to this canyon for generations. Worlds End is a cherished natural icon of Pennsylvania’s north-central highlands.

Access and Directions

Worlds End State Park is in Sullivan County in north-central Pennsylvania, off Pennsylvania Route 154 about 20 miles north of Dushore and 30 miles northeast of Laporte, within the Loyalsock State Forest. The park is reached via State Route 154 through the canyon, roughly 45 minutes from Williamsport. There is no entrance fee. The park has a campground, picnic areas, the creek swimming area, and trailheads for the canyon trails and the Loyalsock Trail. Services in the area are limited — the region is rural and remote. Check PA DCNR for trail conditions, campground reservations and creek swimming conditions before visiting.

Conservation

Pennsylvania DCNR protects Worlds End State Park and its surrounding Loyalsock State Forest. Visitors help by protecting Loyalsock Creek’s water quality (swim responsibly; no soaps or chemicals in the creek), staying on trails to protect the gorge’s fragile vegetation and the hemlock forest, respecting wildlife, packing out all trash, and following all rules. The hemlocks (threatened by invasive insects), the creek’s wild trout fishery and the steep gorge slopes are sensitive. Protecting the creek, the hemlock forest and the canyon habitats sustains both the ecology and the wild beauty of this gem of the Endless Mountains.

Safety

Loyalsock Creek’s swimming holes are beloved but require caution — the creek can run cold and fast, especially in spring and early summer when runoff is high, and rocks are slippery; check conditions, know your swimming ability, supervise children and never dive into unfamiliar water. The canyon trails and the Loyalsock Trail involve steep, rocky terrain — wear sturdy footwear and carry water. The area is remote, with limited cell service; come prepared and let someone know your plans. Check for bears and ticks. Respect the creek’s current and cold water, the steep canyon trails and the remoteness.

Regulations

There is no entrance fee. Swim only in designated swimming areas; no soaps or chemicals in the creek. Stay on designated trails; do not disturb vegetation. Camp only in the designated campground. Pets must be leashed. Drones are restricted. Fishing requires a Pennsylvania license. Fires are restricted to designated fire rings. Pack out all trash. Check PA DCNR for trail conditions, campground reservations, swimming conditions and current rules before visiting.

Nearby Attractions

The Loyalsock State Forest (which surrounds the park and offers extensive additional trails and wild land), the town of Laporte (Sullivan County seat), the Eagles Mere village (a charming Victorian resort), and the broader Endless Mountains region of north-central Pennsylvania lie near the park. The Endless Mountains and the Allegheny Plateau define the region. Worlds End State Park is the heart of the Sullivan County outdoor landscape, easily combined with the Loyalsock State Forest trails, the Eagles Mere area and the Endless Mountains of north-central Pennsylvania.

Tips

Swim in Loyalsock Creek — the natural pools and riffles through the gorge are among the finest creek swimming in Pennsylvania, wonderful on a hot summer day (check conditions, as the creek runs fast in spring and the rocks are slippery). Hike to the High Rock Overlook and other canyon viewpoints for sweeping views of the gorge and forested ridges; the Loyalsock Trail offers miles of scenery beyond. Come in fall for spectacular color in the canyon. The park is remote — bring supplies, as services are limited — and the area rewards those who seek out its wild, intimate beauty.
