Windsor Castle
The oldest and largest occupied castle in the world — a royal residence for over 900 years.
Overview
Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world and an official residence of the British monarch, in continuous royal use for over 900 years since William the Conqueror chose the site shortly after 1066. Sprawling across 13 acres above the Thames in Berkshire, it blends a working royal palace, a medieval fortress, and a treasure-house of art.
Its highlights include St George's Chapel, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and the burial place of ten monarchs, and the lavish State Apartments hung with works by Rubens, Rembrandt, and Holbein. Devastated by a major fire in 1992, the castle was painstakingly restored. The Changing of the Guard and the long history of royal ceremony make it a living monument.
