Dead Horse Point
A dramatic Utah overlook on a high mesa above a sweeping gooseneck bend of the Colorado River.
Overview
Dead Horse Point, in Dead Horse Point State Park near Moab, Utah, is one of the most spectacular overlooks in the American Southwest. From a narrow mesa some 600 meters above the Colorado River, the viewpoint takes in a breathtaking panorama of canyon country — the river curling in a great gooseneck bend far below, surrounded by the layered, eroded buttes and mesas of the Canyonlands region stretching to distant mountains.
The point's evocative name comes from its history as a natural corral, where a narrow neck of land was used to pen wild horses. Famous as a filming location and a sunset destination, and increasingly known for its dark skies, Dead Horse Point offers one of the most sweeping and accessible views of the dramatic red-rock landscape carved by the Colorado River.
