Gettysburg Battlefield
The Pennsylvania field where the Civil War's bloodiest battle turned the tide against the Confederacy.
Overview
Gettysburg is the most famous battlefield in the United States, the site of the largest and bloodiest battle of the American Civil War, fought over three days in July 1863. Confederate General Robert E. Lee's invasion of the North met the Union Army of the Potomac here, and after savage fighting across the ridges, hills, and fields around the small Pennsylvania town — climaxing in the doomed Confederate assault known as Pickett's Charge — Lee was repulsed with staggering losses on both sides.
The battle, with over 50,000 casualties, marked the turning point of the war, and the ground was hallowed forever when President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address at the dedication of the soldiers' cemetery months later. Today Gettysburg National Military Park preserves the rolling battlefield, dotted with monuments, cannons, and markers, as one of the most visited and moving historic sites in America.
