Overview

Van Riper State Park spreads along the shore of Lake Michigamme in Marquette County, west of Marquette in the central Upper Peninsula, a popular and accessible park that doubles as a gateway to some of the wildest country in Michigan. Astride US-41, it offers a sandy Lake Michigamme beach, a campground, trails and the Peshekee River, all set in rugged, forested, lake-and-rock country.

The park is also the gateway to the U.P.’s moose country — moose were reintroduced to the region near here, and the Peshekee Grade road north of the park leads into prime moose habitat and the remote McCormick and Craig Lake wilderness areas. With warm-water swimming and fishing on Lake Michigamme, camping, hiking and a sense of the wild north all around, Van Riper is a beloved central-U.P. destination and a launching point for backcountry adventure.

Recreation

Van Riper offers a sandy Lake Michigamme beach for swimming, boating, paddling and fishing, plus a campground, picnic areas and hiking trails through the rugged forest. The Peshekee River and the surrounding lakes and rock country add paddling and exploration. The park is a gateway to the U.P.’s moose country and the remote McCormick and Craig Lake wilderness areas to the north, making it both a relaxed lake destination and a launching point for backcountry adventure.

Best Time to Visit

Summer brings warm Lake Michigamme water for swimming, full use of the campground and beach, and the best conditions for exploring the surrounding wild country — reserve campsites early. Fall offers spectacular color over the lakes and rock, and prime moose-viewing season. Spring is wild and quiet. Winter opens snow trails. Summer and fall are best for the lake, the camping and venturing into the nearby moose and wilderness country.

History

Van Riper State Park was developed on Lake Michigamme to provide public recreation and beach access in the central Upper Peninsula along the US-41 corridor. The surrounding region became central to Michigan’s moose story when moose were reintroduced to the western U.P. near here in the 1980s, and the park has long served as the accessible gateway to that wild moose-and-wilderness country, blending family recreation with backcountry access.

Geology

Van Riper sits in the ancient bedrock country of the central Upper Peninsula, where some of the oldest rock in North America — over a billion years old — forms the rugged outcrops, ridges and the basin of Lake Michigamme. Glaciers scoured the hard rock and left the lakes, rivers and rocky terrain. The granite and greenstone outcrops and the deep, clear lake reflect this deep-time geology and the Ice Age shaping of the landscape.

Wildlife

The park and the surrounding wild country are prime habitat for moose, reintroduced to the region and ranging the forests and wetlands, along with black bear, gray wolves, white-tailed deer, beaver and a rich community of northern birds. Loons call on Lake Michigamme, bald eagles patrol the shores, and the area north of the park is one of the best places in Michigan to spot moose. The mix of lake, river and forest makes for excellent wildlife watching.

Ecology

Van Riper protects a stretch of the central-U.P. ecosystem of northern forest, rocky outcrops, the Peshekee River and Lake Michigamme’s shore, set amid some of the wildest country in Michigan. The lake, river and forest support a rich northern food web, including the reintroduced moose population. The park’s accessible recreation lands and the vast wild country around them combine developed and wilderness habitat in the heart of the U.P.

Cultural Significance

Van Riper State Park is a beloved central-U.P. destination, blending a popular Lake Michigamme beach and campground with its role as the gateway to Michigan’s moose country and the remote western wilderness. Generations of families have swum, fished and camped here, and the park anchors the region’s identity as the launching point for moose-watching and backcountry adventure in the wild heart of the Upper Peninsula.

Access and Directions

Van Riper State Park is on Lake Michigamme along US-41/M-28 near Champion and Michigamme in Marquette County, west of Marquette — easily reached on the highway. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required. The beach, campground, trailheads and Peshekee River access are within the park, and the Peshekee Grade road north leads into the moose and wilderness country. Marquette and its services lie to the east.

Conservation

The DNR manages Van Riper to protect Lake Michigamme’s shore, the Peshekee River and the surrounding forest while supporting recreation and serving as the gateway to the protected moose and wilderness country to the north. Visitors help by cleaning, draining and drying boats to prevent aquatic invasive species, staying on trails, giving moose and bears wide berth, respecting the wild country, and packing out litter. Protecting the lakes and forest sustains the region’s wildlife and recreation.

Safety

Lake Michigamme is large and can build waves in wind — boaters should watch the weather and wear life jackets, and the water is cold below the surface, so supervise swimmers. If venturing into the moose and wilderness country north of the park, come prepared and self-reliant, give moose and bears wide berth (moose can be dangerous, especially with calves), and never approach wildlife. Bring insect protection and watch for changeable weather.

Regulations

A Recreation Passport is required. Follow Michigan DNR fishing regulations on Lake Michigamme, and boaters must clean, drain and dry to prevent invasive species. Stay on designated trails. Pets must be leashed. Camp only in reserved, designated sites. If exploring the surrounding wilderness, follow backcountry rules and respect wildlife. Check the DNR for current conditions, reservations and moose-country access information.

Nearby Attractions

The Peshekee Grade road north leads into prime moose country and the remote McCormick Wilderness and Craig Lake State Park, while the towns of Champion, Michigamme and Marquette, the Huron Mountains, and the Lake Superior shore are all within reach. The wild lakes, rivers and forests of the central and western U.P. surround the park, making it a hub for both family recreation and backcountry wilderness adventure.

Tips

Enjoy the warm Lake Michigamme beach and reserve campsites early for summer, then use the park as a base to explore the moose country — drive the Peshekee Grade north at dawn or dusk for the best chance to spot moose, from a safe distance. Clean and drain your boat, fish the lake, and pair a visit with the remote McCormick Wilderness and Craig Lake State Park to the north.
