Overview

Proud Lake Recreation Area protects roughly 4,700 acres of woods, wetlands and water along the upper Huron River in Commerce Township, Oakland County, on the northwest side of metro Detroit. Centered on Proud Lake and a winding stretch of the river, it is one of the most popular paddling and trout-fishing escapes within easy reach of the city.

The gentle Huron River through the park is a classic canoe and kayak run, and each spring the river is stocked with trout for a popular catch-and-keep season. Miles of hiking and equestrian trails wind through oak forest, marsh and along the water, and a campground and rustic cabins put visitors close to the river.

Managed by the Michigan DNR and part of the Huron River corridor that links a chain of parks, Proud Lake is open year-round, offering summer paddling, spring fishing, fall hiking and winter cross-country skiing. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry.

Recreation

Paddling the Huron River is the signature outing — a gentle, scenic canoe or kayak run popular with families and beginners, with liveries serving the route in summer. Spring brings a much-loved stocked-trout season on the river just below the dam.

On land, miles of hiking and equestrian trails loop through oak woods and marsh, and a campground and rustic cabins make for an easy overnight. Winter opens quiet cross-country skiing and snowshoeing along the same trails.

Best Time to Visit

Spring is special at Proud Lake for its stocked-trout season on the Huron River, while summer is prime for the canoe and kayak run and warm-weather camping. Fall paints the oak woods and quiets the trails for hiking and riding.

Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing across the park. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required in every season.

History

The upper Huron River has long been a travel and fishing route for the Anishinaabe, and later powered mills in the era of farming and settlement. The state assembled the recreation area during the twentieth century, protecting the river corridor and returning farmland to forest and marsh.

It became a cornerstone of the chain of public lands along the Huron River, valued for accessible paddling and the spring trout tradition.

Geology

Proud Lake lies in the glacial moraine country of Oakland County, where Ice Age ice left rolling hills, kettle wetlands and the broad, marshy valley of the upper Huron River. Proud Lake itself is a widening of the river behind a dam.

The sandy and mucky soils of the valley support extensive marsh and floodplain, giving the park its watery, wildlife-rich character.

Wildlife

The river and marsh corridor make Proud Lake a fine spot for wildlife watching: look for great blue herons, sandhill cranes, wood ducks and beavers along the water, and deer and turkeys in the oak woods.

Spring and fall migration bring songbirds and waterfowl through the valley, and quiet early mornings on the river are best for sightings.

Ecology

Oak forest, marsh, river and lake make Proud Lake a habitat mosaic for white-tailed deer, beaver, muskrat, turtles and a wealth of birds. The Huron River and its wetlands are especially rich, drawing herons, sandhill cranes, waterfowl and songbirds.

The stocked spring trout share the river with resident bass, pike and panfish, and spring wildflowers carpet the oak woods.

Cultural Significance

The upper Huron River corridor through Proud Lake lies within the ancestral territory of the Anishinaabe peoples, who fished and traveled these waters. For modern metro Detroiters, the park's spring trout opener and family canoe runs have become cherished seasonal rituals.

Access and Directions

The recreation area lies in Commerce Township, reached via Wixom Road and Bass Lake Road, just off I-96 and M-5 northwest of Detroit. Trailheads, the campground and river access points are spread along the Huron River corridor.

A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry. The towns of Milford and Wixom nearby offer food, fuel and canoe liveries.

Conservation

Protecting the water quality of the Huron River and its marshes is central to Proud Lake's value, supporting the trout fishery and the river's paddling. The DNR manages the floodplain and trails to balance heavy recreation with habitat.

Visitors help by following catch limits, keeping the river clean, and respecting marsh and shoreline vegetation.

Safety

The Huron River is gentle but cold in spring; paddlers and anglers should dress for the water and watch for current and sweepers. Crowds are heavy on the spring trout opener and summer weekends, so plan access and parking.

Watch for ticks and bugs in the marshy woods, share trails with horses, and dress for cold and ice in winter.

Regulations

A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry. Camping is by reservation at the campground and cabins, and pets must be leashed. Equestrian use is limited to designated trails.

The spring trout season has its own dates, gear and limit rules on the river; standard Michigan DNR licensing and seasons apply to all fishing. Check current regulations before visiting.

Nearby Attractions

Charming downtown Milford and neighboring Kensington Metropark — with Kent Lake on the same Huron River — are just minutes away, making an easy combined outing. The Huron River continues downstream toward Island Lake and the Ann Arbor area.

The surrounding Huron Valley chain of lakes and parks offers further paddling, hiking and fishing nearby.

Tips

For the spring trout opener, arrive early — the river below the dam draws a crowd. Families should try the gentle canoe run, using a livery for shuttle, and bring layers for cold spring water.

Buy a Recreation Passport, watch for sandhill cranes along the marsh, and pair a paddle with nearby Kensington Metropark or downtown Milford.
