Whitney Portal
The trailhead for Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the contiguous United States.
Overview
Whitney Portal, at about 2,550 meters in California's eastern Sierra Nevada, is the main trailhead for the ascent of Mount Whitney, which at 4,421 meters (14,505 feet) is the highest peak in the contiguous United States. From this forested staging point above the town of Lone Pine, hikers and climbers set off on the grueling 22-mile round-trip Mount Whitney Trail, climbing over 1,800 meters to the summit.
The trailhead is the gateway to one of the most sought-after summit hikes in America, so popular that access is controlled by a competitive permit lottery. With its dramatic granite scenery, a small store and campground, and views up toward the Sierra crest, Whitney Portal is the bustling launch point for the demanding push to the roof of the lower 48 states — and also a terminus of the High Sierra Trail and a resupply for John Muir Trail hikers.
