Overview

Lava Beds National Monument, on the flank of the Medicine Lake shield volcano in remote northeastern California, protects the greatest concentration of lava-tube caves in North America — more than 800 of them. Many are open for self-guided exploration with a headlamp and helmet.

Above ground, the monument preserves rugged volcanic terrain, Native American rock art, and the site of the Modoc War, alongside excellent high-desert wildlife and birding.

Recreation

Visitors explore dozens of accessible lava-tube caves on their own (from easy walk-through tubes to tight crawls), hike the volcanic landscape, view ancient petroglyphs and pictographs, and bird-watch the surrounding high desert and nearby refuges.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and fall offer mild surface temperatures; summer is hot above ground but the caves stay cool year-round. Winter is cold and snowy but the caves remain explorable. Check for seasonal cave closures protecting bats.

History

The Modoc people lived here for millennia; the monument includes Captain Jack's Stronghold, the natural lava fortress where Modoc fighters held off the U.S. Army during the 1872–73 Modoc War. Rock art records thousands of years of habitation.

Geology

The caves are lava tubes — formed when the outer crust of a basaltic lava flow hardened while molten rock continued draining out beneath, leaving long hollow tunnels. They issued from the Medicine Lake Volcano over the last half-million years.

Wildlife

Bats roost in many caves (some close seasonally to protect them), while the surface and nearby Tule Lake refuge host pronghorn, mule deer, and immense flocks of wintering waterfowl and raptors, including bald eagles.

Ecology

High-desert sagebrush and juniper cover the volcanic surface, while the dark, stable caves host specialized life and ice that persists year-round in some tubes — a stark contrast of habitats.

Cultural Significance

Lava Beds holds deep significance as Modoc homeland and the site of their remarkable wartime stand, alongside one of the richest concentrations of Native rock art in the region.

Access and Directions

Remote, in California's far northeast near the Oregon border, roughly an hour from Klamath Falls, Oregon, or Tulelake, California. Borrow a free loaner flashlight and get a cave permit at the visitor center; bring a helmet and headlamp.

Conservation

To prevent spreading white-nose syndrome to bats, visitors must not bring gear used in other caves and must follow decontamination rules; some caves close seasonally for bat protection. Do not touch rock art.

Safety

Caving is self-guided — wear a helmet and bring multiple light sources and warm layers. Watch for low ceilings, uneven floors, and ice; tell someone your plans, as cell service is absent in this remote area.

Nearby Attractions

Tule Lake and Lower Klamath national wildlife refuges (premier birding), the Medicine Lake Highlands, and Mount Shasta to the south are all within the region.

Tips

Start at the visitor center for a cave permit, free loaner light, and white-nose decontamination, then explore the cave loop road. Bring a helmet, headlamp, gloves, and warm layers, and try Mushpot Cave (lit) first if you're new to caving.
