Ouachita River
A public river in the lakes, rivers and Delta of Arkansas, with public boat and paddle access.
Overview
Ouachita River is a public water in the lakes, rivers and Delta of Arkansas, open to boating, fishing and paddling. Anglers here target largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass, crappie, bream, channel and blue catfish, and white bass. The cold tailwaters below the dams — the White and Little Red rivers — are world-famous trout fisheries.
Recreation
As moving water, it fishes by current — target seams, eddies, holes, bends and woody cover rather than open flats.
Public access points along Ouachita River put boaters and paddlers on the water.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and fall are typically the most productive and comfortable times to fish here; summer brings the warmest water and the most boat traffic.
Safety
River current, woody snags, shifting sandbars and changing water levels are the main hazards. Respect the current, scout unfamiliar stretches, give way to any commercial traffic, and never anchor from the stern in a strong flow.
