Horseshoe Bend
A dramatic horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River carved deep into red sandstone near Page, Arizona.
Overview
Horseshoe Bend is one of the most photographed natural landmarks in the American Southwest, a spectacular horseshoe-shaped meander where the Colorado River loops almost completely around a towering sandstone promontory near Page, Arizona. From the overlook on the rim, the green river curls some 300 meters below, framed by sheer red-rock cliffs in a near-perfect U.
Just downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and a short walk from the highway, the bend has become an iconic and immensely popular stop, drawing crowds for its dizzying, vertigo-inducing views — especially at sunset, when the low sun lights the canyon walls in glowing reds and oranges. Its sweeping, almost impossibly photogenic geometry has made Horseshoe Bend a symbol of the dramatic canyon country of the Colorado Plateau.
