Overview

El Retiro (Buen Retiro Park) is the most famous park in Madrid, a magnificent 125-hectare green oasis in the heart of the Spanish capital and a beloved place for picnics, boating, and leisurely strolls. Once the private retreat of Spanish royalty, it opened to the public in the 19th century and is now the city's communal living room, filled on weekends with families, performers, and friends gathering on its lawns and around its grand monuments.

Highlights include the large boating lake overlooked by a grand monument, the exquisite glass-and-iron Crystal Palace, formal gardens, and tree-lined avenues. Recently inscribed (with the Paseo del Prado) as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, El Retiro is the cherished green heart of Madrid and a delightful spot to picnic and relax in one of Europe's great capitals.
